FAN-SEE SHANHAI
Multifunctional culturally significant pop ornamental fan

FAN-SEE SHANHAI, a pop ornamental multifunctional handheld fan with cultural significance, introducing creatures from the ancient Chinese myth - “The Classic of Mountains and Seas” along with traditional patterns and techniques. It is a set of cards that can be combined to form a handheld fan. The goal is to promote traditional myths to non native audiences (from age 16 to 25) and those who are interested but not familiar with the specific tradition and myths. By attracting customers with the product’s appearance like vivid characters and patterns, this project can stimulate the public's curiosity and encourage them to learn more about different cultural myths starting with this particular literature.



  

As the title suggests, the original Classic of Mountains and Seas consists of two parts - Shanjing (Classic of mountains) and Haijing (Classic of seas). 

  • The Mountains Classic consists of five chapters, namely the Southern Mountains, the Western Mountains, the Northern Mountains, the Eastern Mountains, and the Central Mountains. 

  • The Seas Classic consists of thirteen chapters, consisting of Southern Lands Beyond the Seas, Western Lands Beyond the Seas, Northern Lands Beyond the Seas, Eastern Lands Beyond the Seas, Southern Lands Within the Seas, Western Lands Within the Seas, Northern Lands Within the Seas, Eastern Lands Within the Seas, Great Eastern Wastelands, Great Southern Wastelands, Great Western Wastelands, Great Northern Wastelands, and Lands Within the Seas. 

To design the fan, I selected six iconic characters from each of the two parts, Classic of Mountains and Classic of Seas, for a total of twelve and used gold and silver to distinguish between the characters of “the Mountains Classic” and “the Seas Classic”.
